National Newspaper Empowers Young Minds
Teachers now have a powerful tool to engage elementary and middle school children in understanding national and global current events, while bolstering reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.
The Current Events—the only national newspaper written especially for children in grades 2 through 8—is educationally effective, provides timely information, and empowers students to gain confidence in their understanding of world events and the concepts behind them.
While working as a high school teacher and reading coach for struggling third and fourth graders, Suri Roth recognized that children’s natural curiosity about the world turned everyday news events into powerful learning experiences. To aid her in-classroom lessons, Suri wrote articles that have turned into The Current Events. Her colleagues requested copies to use in their classrooms and The Current Events was launched.
Published in three differentiated reading levels, today The Current Events is Board of Education-approved for classrooms in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago, and is used in public, private, home and parochial schools in 20 states.
Here are some reasons why The Current Events is noteworthy:
- The 8-page advertising-free newspaper features the latest national and world events in a manner that strengthens students’ communication skills, and appeals to kids’ natural curiosity of the world around them.
- The features and special departments (such as vocabulary, research-based questions, and content connectors) are designed to prepare students for academic achievement.
- Fosters higher-order thinking skills, and meets certified Lexile framework and national standards.
- Builds a strong foundation for literacy; enhances vocabulary and essay writing skills
